SG Energy Solutions supported electrical and controls engineering upgrades at the La Paloma Generating Co. facility near McKittrick, California, enhancing system connectivity and performance across multiple GT24 gas turbines. The work included new conduit runs, junction box installations, and device validation in support of a low part-load upgrade with minimal historical project precedent.
Scope of Work
- Installing new conduit runs, low and high voltage wiring, control boxes, and junction boxes
- Installing system devices and electrical connections to the main power feed and control room
- Validating device operation to meet design specifications
The project supported four Alstom GT24 gas turbines and was completed under an investor electrical upgrades contract valued at approximately $2.2M.
Challenges
This upgrade was the second of its kind in North America, meaning limited prior project knowledge existed for the low part-load configuration. SG Energy team members bridged that gap through proactive learning, coordination with site teams, and structured on-site training before and during execution.
Solutions
To prepare installers and trades for the unique scope, SG Energy delivered daily training sessions, supplemental videos, photos, and detailed red-lined electrical drawings. This preparation ensured team readiness, consistent execution quality, and alignment with project goals, enabling successful integration and system validation.

SG Energy Solutions provided critical electrical and instrumentation support at the Hermiston Generating Plant in Oregon, helping coordinate upgrades tied to turbine diffuser changeout and generator preparation. Working alongside mechanical teams under a tight schedule, our team ensured electrical readiness and signal continuity in confined, operational spaces.
Scope of Work
- Removal of all instrumentation required for diffuser changeout, including bearing vibration, thermocouples, and fire detection devices
- Exhaust thermocouples and third stage wheel space sensors routed through bearing tunnels
- De-termination of Unit 1 Gas & Steam Turbine main and neutral leads
- Preparation and staging for Unit 1 Gas Turbine Generator major electrical scope
Electrical installation and changeover supported the mechanical upgrade while maintaining operational continuity.
Challenges
Work was performed in multiple confined spaces with a compressed timeline for gas turbine completion. Additionally, SG Energy was tasked with assisting mechanical execution and was authorized to begin pre-installation electrical work on steam turbine externals while the unit remained online, requiring careful coordination to maintain safety and avoid unnecessary shutdowns.
Solutions
SG Energy applied disciplined electrical execution and close onsite coordination with mechanical staff to ensure the project stayed on schedule and integrated seamlessly. Pre-installation conduit runs, panel mounting, and instrumentation staging reduced the risk of delays and supported timely readiness for generator commissioning.

SG Energy Solutions supported advanced electrical and controls upgrades at Fort Saint Vrain Generating Co., contributing expertise to a hot gas path and I&C modernization effort. The project required disciplined execution under unique site conditions and accelerated outage coordination to support updated turbine systems.
Scope of Work
SG Energy’s role focused on electrical engineering and controls integration tied to a hot gas path upgrade with a DLN 2.6+ package. Work included installation of the CDM system (Generation Mark VI-e), Op-flex auto-tune package, electronic fuel valves, and Hazardous Gas (HAZ-GAS) panels.
Additional electrical tasks included relocating and installing auxiliary panels and controller components, welding conduit supports, building new probe holders, and running sensor cabling to junction boxes.
Challenges
Minimal onsite support from customer personnel was available at the outage start due to COVID-19 constraints, requiring SG Energy teams to adapt quickly. This shift demanded flexible planning and real-time coordination to maintain execution quality when typical staffing support was not present.
Solutions
Drawing on prior turbine and control upgrade experience, SG Energy took a lead technical role in the comprehensive electrical and control systems scope. The team provided structured sequencing, thorough documentation, and adaptive execution to ensure all systems, from hazardous gas panels to sensors and controllers, were installed and integrated with minimal disruption to the outage timeline.
